Summary of Illinois Western Corn Rootworm
Monitoring Program 1999

University of Illinois Extension, Department of Crop Sciences
Compiled by: Susan T. Ratcliffe, Michael E. Gray, and Kevin L. Steffey

Country Trap Capture Averages

Field Trap Averages Broken Out By County

Table of All Field Trap Averages

This Summary contains trap capture averages for 269 sites from 26 counties in Illinois. This summary provides general information regarding the presence or absence of western corn rootworms in soybean fields in sampled counties. Trap capture averages vary greatly from field to field within a county, and the use of a soil insecticide must be made on a field-by-field basis. We continue to encourage the use of 12 Pherocon AM traps per field over a four-week period, as described in the Western Corn Rootworm Insect Information sheet, to determine if a soil insecticide application is necessary. The four-trap method described in the publication should be used only to determine the presence or absence of western corn rootworms.

On behalf of the University of Illinois Extension, we thank all the individuals who participated in this program and we look forward to continued cooperation to improve management of the western corn rootworn in Illinois. In 1999, many of the individuals who reported scouting data in 1998 participated in our 1999 Root Rating Program. As a result of this participation, Extension Specialists have refined the economic threshold. If you scouted in 1999, please consider participating in the 2000 Root Rating Program to assist us in determining if further refinement in the economic threshold is warranted. In addition, as a result of funding from a Conservation 2000 grant (Illinois Department of Agriculture), a limited number of free sticky traps will be available to individuals interested in scouting soybean fields in 2000. For more information on the 2000 Root Rating and Western Corn Rootworm Monitoring programs, contact Susan T. Ratcliffe by email (sratclif@uiuc.edu) or phone (217) 333-9656.

The Western Corn Rootworm Insect Information sheet is available on the internet, or a copy may be obtained by contacting University of Illinois Extension, Department of Crop Sciences, 1102 S. Goodwin Avenue, Urbana, IL 61801, (217) 333-6651, or via email (ipm@uiuc.edu)

Producers may also report their scouting results directly to the University of Illinois Extension via the Internet.
