Illinois experienced cool spring temperatures that persisted through the second week of June, holding soil temperatures below normal. Corn and soybean plantings were delayed due to a prolonged wet spring. Corn rootworm egg hatch as well as larval development was delayed in 1996. However, once the fields did dry, we were able to complete all trials successfully. For the most part we were quite successful in achieving our planned goals. We were successful in obtaining meaningful data for the European corn borer trials that included Bt-corn varieties. We were also able to obtain significantly meaningful data from our alfalfa, black cutworm, soybean (herbicide insecticide interaction) trial, and all corn rootworm efficacy trials. Our vegetable trials (sweet corn) also provided significantly meaningful data. With your continued support, we are looking forward to the 1997 growing season and working with industry personal.

The 1996 annual "Insect Management and Insecticide Evaluation" technical report number 11 is produced through the cooperation of the Illinois Natural History Survey (INHS), Center of Economic Entomology and the University of Illinois.

This program provides an impartial evaluation of genetically engineered plants and of chemical and biological pesticides applied to a variety of field, forage, and vegetable crops at several locations in Illinois. Also included in this program is research on applied aspects of crop production and the use of biological controls. We have tried to write these reports so that they are of the most use to the agribusiness industry. We welcome any suggestions that you might have that would improve the interchange of data.
