	Soybean Aphid Update Reports of dramatic densities of soybean aphids in northern Illinois have been validated by sampling of 14 fields in Kendall County that have been studied since 2001. Whether to use an insecticide application remains a tricky decision; pod set is the critical stage to be protected. Sampling twice over four to five days is recommended before choosing to spray; additional guidelines are provided here.
	Another Soybean Aphid Update A catch of 131 soybean aphids in the Dekalb suction trap last week has been reported. Continue monitoring population densities and keep an eye on previously uninfested soybean fields.
	Start Thinking About Second-Generation European Corn Borers It's about the time when European corn borer moth flights start to increase. Scouting for second-generation corn borers can be challenging because of extended moth flight and the potential to find mixed ecotypes. Guidelines for scouting and management are provided, along with a list of recommended insecticides for situations where control is warranted.
	Leaning Corn and Suffering Soybeans Heavy rains and winds in early July caused extensive "leaning" in many cornfields in some parts of central and northern Illinois. How and why this happens, along with the prognosis for flattened corn, are described. Soybean plants that are standing in water or in saturated soils are struggling greatly. Generally, the soybean crop continues to lag a bit because of cool temperatures.
